The city of Guimarães is historically associated with the foundation of Portuguese nationality and identity.
Known as “The Cradle of the Nation”, here took place in 1128 some of the main political and military events, which would lead to the independence and birth of a new nation.
Its historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, making it definitely one of the largest tourist centers in the region. Its streets and monuments breathe history and delight those who visit it!
Guimarães presents a very rich variety in its architecture, in it stand out the Castelo de Guimarães built in the tenth century by the Countess Mumadona to defend the population from the attacks of Muslims and the Palace of the Duques de Bragança, built in the fifteenth century by D. Afonso, 1st duque de Bragança, monuments of obligatory visit.
Braga has a bimillennial history that began in Ancient Rome, when it was founded in 16 bC as Bracara Augusta in honor of the Roman emperor Augustus (r. 27 bC–14 aD). In the 16th century Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa, influenced by his visit to the city of Rome, designs a new city where squares and churches abound as in Rome.
In the “City of the Three Sacred-Hills”: they are sanctuaries located to the southeast of the city in a mountain range, and are by the order East to South: O Bom Jesus, Sameiro and Falperra (Sta. Maria Madalena and Sta. Marta das Cortiçadas).
